Expect the unexpected!!
Well I did end up going for a walk to the water's edge but not with the dogs and I did not end up sitting out in the verandah to soak up the sun!!What did I end up doing today was not at all planned and it is great to just go with the flow!! After talking to you earlier this morning, I decided to give Millie a bath as she has been so itchy and losing more hair in chunks. Having done this and getting rather wet, I dried her off a bit with the hair dryer and then decided to soak up some sun and brush her at the same time. Firstly I thought about sitting in the verandah and brushing her and taking in the warmth of the sun through the glass, but ended up sitting on the step outside on the landing still in the sun, but not as hot.
While brushing her James from next door came out on the verandah and we started chatting, he commented on a massive flock of birds far out in the water obviously having a greatg feed. That chair is looking better and better. Roll on tomorrow, the day is expected to be even better than today so it will be perfect to go get the stuff from Geoff's place.
While talking, Suze also came out for a smoke and we got talking about a perfect day for a paddle. They ended up offering the kayak if I wanted to if I was o.k. to go out by myself. WOO HOO!! before I knew it I said yes I would go out by myself. So before I knew it James was down the stairs and carrying the kayak down to the water's edge for me. Well it did not take me long to get down to the waters edge with the dogs not happy that I had left them behind.
Gerard was not home so I left him a note to say I had gone paddling!!!!!!!! Left about 12noon and did not get back til 1.30pm. I took the mobile phone with me, yep I tied it in some plastic bags so if I did get into trouble it would not get wet and I could ring for help if needed.. Also took a bottle of water, some almonds for me and some bread for the birds, but they did not want it. Also a plastic bowl as a bailing bucket and a towel in case I got wet!!!
I looked a sight with my old trakky dacks that had paint splats all over them, an old t shirt cause I had just washed the dog!! My straw hat!!! not a good look and a lime green life jacket! Well off I go down to the water thinking oh my god how am I going to get into the boat and take off by myself? Don't worry Jill just do it.
On with the hat, the life jacket, pick up the paddle, push the boat into the water, step into the water, oh damn I have reasonably good runners on and I am ankle deep in the water, too late to worry now, just keep on going. The thought running through my mind at the moment was,,,,,, the last time I was in this kayak, it was a tight fit if you recall my first episode of going out in the kayak!!! Well amazingly I just slid into the opening of the kayak, well I have lost about 10 kilos since that first time I got in one. That made me feel just so good and the fact that I managed to get into the kayak by myself, although I should have been a bit further into the water cause I hit the bottom!!
Whoo hoo... I am away... I decided to go around to the left and head towards Eagle Point, Gerard reckons it is about 7 or 8 k's by car, by water it should not be so far!!! I just wanted to get to the part of land that sticks out and see what was around the corner!!! The water was like a sheet of glass, so still, no wind, the warmth of the sun, just perfect conditions.
It is such a feeling of freedom, gliding on top of the water and sitting so close to it, I was in awe. The funny thing is that the swans swim away from you in such a panic compared to when you walk along the bank and they come to you for food. I even threw out some bread for them, but they did not come near me.
As I paddled on there were all sizes of fish jumping out of the water!! In front of me and in the distance. Eventually I got to the corner and got around it thinking I would be at Eagle Point!! No such luck I had only got as far as the housing estate with the large palm trees, Eagle Point was still a long way off, I was tempted to paddle on, but I had to restrain myself cause I did have to paddle back again... So I turned around and paddled back to the canal entrance and went through the canal and turned up the first side opening and went around the block back to where I started. I am glad I stopped there and did not go any further as there was a slight breeze coming up and it made a difference to paddling back. Once in sight of the part where I set out in the water I paddled hard to get the kayak as far up the bank as possible to be able to get out easily. On thinking about it I should have backed into the bank cause I was facing up hill and it is not easy to get out that way. I managed to haul myself out eventually and pull the kayak up onto the grass. Boy was it heavy, my wrists were weak from using the paddle for so long. While walking back to the house, I could hear the two dogs happy to see me, you would have thought I had left them for days.
I had been away for one and a half hours, could not believe it had been that long. Gerard arrived home just as I came in the back door. Just a wonderful feeling for the day. I put the telly on at about 5.45pm and the next thing I know the phone was ringing, good grief it was 7pm. I had been asleep.
Well it is another day tomorrow, lovely weather again, am off to get my chair, yippee.
Will let you know how it goes..
bye for now
luv Jill
